Goshka Macuga, born in 1967 in Warsaw (PL), living and working in London (GB), hosts a historic reenactment of the legendary concert series Jazz in the Garden, which took place in the Sculpture Garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie from the inauguration of the museum in the late 1960s until the 1990s. The Sculpture Garden played an important role for music fans in Berlin for decades. Avant-garde jazz was performed among the artworks, attracting large audiences and creating a new function for the Garden, originally designed by Mies van der Rohe to house sculptures from the permanent collection. An idyllic modernist arcadia, it welcomed intellectuals, artists, and jazz lovers of all sorts—from ten to sixty years old and from teachers to freaks—to the sounds of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and Alexander von Schlippenbach, who all performed there, among other great musicians. Goshka Macuga and the Johansson/Schlippenbach Quartett invite you to a very special night event, a revival of the Jazz in the Garden series. Goshka Macuga’s new sculptural ensemble is on view at the Neue Nationalgalerie as part of the 5th berlin biennial.
