The curatorial workshop Real Players will take place around the opening days of the 6th Berlin Biennale from June 5 to 15, 2010. Consisting of ten days of seminars and debates, as well as exhibition and studio visits, it aims to enhance the young curators’ professional development by exploring in depth topics of this year’s edition of the biennial. The workshop will thus emphasize the question of how to navigate, think, and create new perspectives within our current social context and realities. Further it will provide the young participants with an exclusive look ‘behind the scenes’ of the 6th Berlin Biennale as well as give insights into the current art production of Berlin, supplemented by a two-day excursion to Warsaw.
Real Players will focus on a variety of subjects, including methods of engaging with a wider social or political environment to bypass the normative exhibition context, and how to create and reveal reconfigurations of cultural production and institutional creating. The workshop will also be exploring different seminar formats, from participatory sessions and walks to more classical lectures and debates.
The speakers will include amongst others Elena Filipovic (USA/Belgium), Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy (Mexico), Joanna Mytkowska (Poland), Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez (Slovenia/France), Bojana Piškur (Slovenia), The Pinky Show (USA), and Federico Zukerfeld (Argentina) & Loreta Garin Guzman (Chile) from the artist collective Etcetera.
After a restricted application process, in which more than 70 international candidates took part, all participants were chosen by the following selection committee: Gabriele Horn (Director, KW Institute for Contemporary Art/Berlin Biennale), Kathrin Rhomberg (Curator, 6th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art), Eva Schmitt (Department of Visual Arts, Goethe-Institut), Michael Thoss (Managing Director, Allianz Cultural Foundation), and Ana Janevski (Conception, Curatorial Workshop).
The extraordinary workshop program of the curatorial workshop gives the young participants from around the world a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with leading curators at close hand. Previous editions already saw such renowned key speakers as: Ute Meta Bauer, René Block, Iara Boubnova, Ann Demeester, Okwui Enwezor, Charles Esche, Jens Hoffmann, Vasif Kortun, Maria Lind, Chus Martínez, Mark Nash, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Anton Vidokle, and What, How & For Whom / WHW, amongst others.
The curatorial workshop Real Players was organized by the Berlin Biennale in cooperation with Goethe-Institut e. V., Munich, Allianz Cultural Foundation, and BMW.
