Taking the alphabet he designed for the 5th berlin biennial as a starting point, graphic designer and typeface inventor Ludovic Balland uncovers how architecture and other visual elements in Berlin became the components for the construction of letters of a new typeface. He demonstrates how typography is less the design of an individual letter or word or even the creation of a visual uniformity for a particular idea, but an entire relational system of signification at work in the process revealing how pictures, words, and stories meet on a page. Ludovic Balland is responsible for the design of all the publications of the 5th berlin biennial. Born 1973 in Switzerland, he lives and works in Basle (CH).
